Hanover Engineering assisted Polk Township in the replacement of the culvert crossing Dotters Creek along Dotters Corner Road in Monroe County, PA. The existing culvert was undersized and in considerable disrepair, ultimately impeding fish passage during low flows. Flooding and damages to the roadway prompted the Township to undertake the replacement project. A detailed evaluation and survey of the existing structure was conducted by Hanover Engineering. Understanding the need to replace the culvert as quickly as possible to accommodate local traffic and provide access to residents, the structure was specifically selected and designed for ease of construction, ensuring no special equipment would be required for site preparation and installation.
Anticipating the need to widen the waterway opening and maintain the existing road profile, it was determined that the optimal replacement structure would be a pre-fabricated concrete open bottom arch culvert. This design greatly improved flow conditions to pass the design storm without overtopping and with improved fish passage.
Following removal of the original structure, Hanover Engineering inspected the existing site conditions and reviewed all project design requirements. In addition to completing the design drawings for the culvert replacement, Hanover Engineering provided the Township with proposed cost estimates, prepared and obtained the required environmental permits, and provided construction consultation during the course of the project.
