Hanover Engineering assisted Jackson Township in the replacement of an existing twin 36” CMP culvert on Spruce Woods Road. During an inspection by the Roadmaster in spring of 2014, it was discovered the structural integrity of the culverts were compromised by means of a partial collapse of both pipes. In addition, the bottom of the pipes were severely eroded away. Upon our recommendation, the Township closed the road to vehicular traffic.
Hanover Engineering conducted a detailed site evaluation, including an environmental assessment to delineate the wetlands within the project area and performed a field survey of the existing culvert and surrounding areas. The collected information was utilized to develop a model of the watercourse and properly sized the new culvert to convey the flows for the designated storm event. Additional design considerations for the project were to maintain the existing road profile and no earth disturbance within the adjacent wetland area.
It was determined, a 5’x10’ concrete box culvert would be constructed to achieve the additional capacity while improving the fish passage. Hanover Engineering prepared and coordinated the submission of the permit documents to the PA DEP for approval. Upon the issuance of the general permit, Hanover Engineering assisted the Township in the bid process for the project. Hanover Engineering also, provided construction observation.
